A Short Blade (Wakizashi) in Mount (Koshirae)
Edo period, blade 17th century, signed Kishinmaru Kunishige, mount 19th century
The blade shinogi zukuri (longitudinal ridges on the sides of the blade) and iori-mune (shallow-peaked back) with a medium point, the forging pattern itame (wood grain) with midare-hada temper line, the tip with a medium turnback; the tang unshortened with one peg hole

The koshirae comprising a black lacquer saya (scabbard) in ishime (stone) finish decorated with galloping horses carved in low relief in glossy black and fitted with a shakudo kojiri (cover on tip end) formed as a monkey reaching for a gourd, the details gilt; the tsuka (handle) wrapped in leather with shakudo nanako fuchi-kashira decorated with gilt monkeys, signed Morisawa Hisanobu and with kao (cursive monogram) and a pair of menuki of monkeys in dancer's caps; the tsuba (sword guard) a shakudo nanako plate with a monkey leading a horse, signed Somin and with kao (cursive monogram)
