The British Antarctic Expedition, 1910-1913: an Album containing 449 gelatin silver contact prints by Ponting [1910-1913], oblong 2° 13 x 18in. (33.1 x 45.8cm.). 53 grey card leaves, 51 with prints mounted recto and verso, the prints 4 5/8 x 6½in. (11.8 x 16.5cm.) and smaller, each with typed number and title on mounted slip beneath, nos. 1-563, A1a-A236), 59 of the prints with small losses, some dampstaining to inner margins of mounts, with some images affected, many with fading to extremities as usual. Original green half morocco by A.R. Adams & Son, Dover, in mahogany case. Provenance: Edith Hazell Atkinson (Surgeon Edward Leicester Atkinson's sister) and thence by descent to the present owner, her great-nephew.
AN IMPORTANT SET OF PONTING'S GREATEST IMAGES FROM SCOTT'S LAST EXPEDITION.
The photographs are numbered according to Ponting's lists of negatives (No 1 Portfolio, Numbers 1 to 286 List of 7 x 5" Negatives, Scott Expedition; No 2 Portfolio Numbers 287 to 564B List of 7" x 5" Negatives Scott Expedition; Numbers A1 to A243 List of 5" x 4" Negatives Scott Expedition). The album includes an unusually large number (449 prints from the total of 825 negatives listed by the photographer) of Ponting's images and excludes the photographs taken by the southern party which are sometimes included with Ponting's own images (see for example the album of 440 contact prints by Ponting and others, Christie's, 21 September 2001, lot 101).
Atkinson led the search party which found the bodies of Scott, Wilson and Bowers on the Ross Barrier in November 1912.
