SIR HENRY MORTON STANLEY (1841-1904)
Stanley's carte-de-visite album: an 'Art' album of forty-two studio portrait photographs, the majority cartes-de-visites, eight of Stanley (from 1872), and portraits of Dorothy Stanley, his sweetheart Alice Pike, Colonel (later General) Gordon, the Duke of Sutherland, colleagues from his African journeys including his secretary Swinburne (1886), H.H. Johnston (1890), Parke (1890), his manservant W. Hoffman (1886), Col. Finley Andersson of the New York Herald (1872), A. Sims (c.1880), Captain John Webster (1874) and others, seventeen signed or inscribed to Stanley by the donors, the portraits and photographs window mounted in eighteen card leaves, the album 11¾ x 9in. (29.8 x 22.8cm.) overall.
This cartes-de-visites album, of American manufacture (Battle Creek, Michigan), was probably a gift from Dorothy on Stanley's American tour of 1890. The selection includes many from Stanley's travels, with cards signed from donors in Loanda, Cape Town and Zanzibar, the Stanley portraits including the famous studio portrait of 'Mr Stanley in the dress he wore when he met Dr. Livingstone in Africa' (1872) and a very rare image of Stanley titled 'Stanley. 1874 in Afrika'. Signed photographs include two cartes-de-visites of Colonel Gordon, signed 'C.G. Gordon', the Governor of Equatoria when Stanley crossed Africa on the Anglo-American expedition. Those relating to Loanda include a photograph of Commander Brito Capello, one of three Portuguese explorers who were entertained with Stanley on a Portuguese gunboat conveying them to Lisbon in August 1877. Capello inscribed his photograph to Stanley 'as a token of repect and great admiration/B.Capello/Loanda 22 August 1877.' (42)
