Lot Essay

Listed in the Liberty Pewter Sketchbook, this base for an oil lamp, that would have had a circular globe resting on the wick station, is an object of extreme rarity, none other having been seen at auction before. Its three footed support similar to Knox's Clutha and pewter bowl illustrated in (ed) Martin, S. Archibald Knox, London ArtMedia Press, 2001, p. 15, its sensuously modelled base, and the preference for the sheen and glow of metal rather than chased design, reminiscent of the 'Great Clocks', all point to Knox as the maker.
