Engraved folding panoramic frontispieces, 65 engraved plates, numerous wood-engraved illustrations, 10 full-page, all after daguerrotypes or sketches by Frederick Catherwood. (Frontispieces and first and last few leaves spotted, Rr3, Rr4 and one plate detached and loosely inserted in vol. one). Payne, 1775. 4° (255 x 210mm.). (Title slightly spotted.) 19th-century half calf (extremities rubbed). Provenance: Francis Lister Hawks (1798-1866, bookplate). FIRST EDITION WITH AN INTERESTING PROVENANCE: Hawks was one of the founders of the New York Historical Society and the author of a wide-ranging variety of books including A History of North Carolina and Narrative of the Expedition ... to the China Seas and Japan ... under the command of Commodore ...
