Lot Essay

In his exhaustive work on wind instruments from central Africa (La systématique des Aérophones de l'Afrique Centrale, Tervuren, 1974), Jean Sebastien Laurenty illustrates several ivory oliphants with similar dotted ornament (nos. 1.367, 1.375, 1.558, 1.589 and 1.668). All are attributed to the Uele River region of Northern Congo and one more specifically to the Zarde tribe.
