EVERARD YSBRAND IDES (b.1660)
Three Years Travels from Moscow over-land to China: thro' great Ustiga, Siriania, Permia, Sibiria, Daour, Great Tartary, &c. to Peking, London: for W. Freeman, J. Walthoe, T. Newborough, J. Nicholson, and R. Parker, 1706. 4° (245 x 188mm.). Engraved title dated 1705, folding engraved map and 30 plates, with the 2 blanks. (Map with long but clean tear, last plate detaching, text lightly browned or spotted.) Contemporary panelled calf, gilt decorated spine (head and tail of spine chipped, front joints cracked but cords still firmly holding, leather partly split along front joints, extremities rubbed). Provenance: Charles Peer (inscription on endpaper).

Ides reached China in 1693 on a mission as Russian envoy. Lust notes that the "Description of China" in his book "was by a Chinese doctor, Dionysoius Kao, who practised in Siam and India, and was a Roman Catholic convert." Lust 519.
