Voyage en divers etats d'Europe et d'Asie. Entrepris pour découvrir un nouveau chemin à la Chine, Paris: Claude Barbin, Jean Boudot, and George & Louis Josse, 1692. Small 4° (236 x 177mm.). Engraved portrait of Stanislaus Jablonowski by Picart, folding engraved map and 3 plates by Vallet, engraved headpieces by Vallet, historiated initials. (Lightly browned or spotted, a few ink stains, light marginal thumb-soiling.) Contemporary marbled calf, wide border of leaves on sides, "IHS" stamped in gilt in the centre, raised bands, red morocco lettering-piece in one compartment, the others decorated with gilt fleur-de-lys, gilt edges (skilfully rebacked with old spine relaid). Provenance: Edward Taylor (bookplate).

FIRST EDITION. "In 1685 Avril set out to find an overland route to China for Jesuit missionaries. He journeyed via Cyprus, Syria, eastern Asia Minor and Persia to Astrackhan in Tartary where he was turned back by the Russians who would not allow him to cross their Asian territories. Avril then returned to Constantinople and made his way to France via Moldavia" (Blackmer, p. 13). Blackmer and Lust only list the 1693 edition.
