Details
Burroughs Wellcome & Co. (suppliers) A tin of "Tabloids" tea, originally containing one hundred tabloids of compressed tea, 3 1/8 x 2¼ x ¾in. (8 x 5.8 x 1.9cm.), the bottom of the tin marked for use as a striker for matches.Provenance:
Sir Ernest Henry Shackleton (1874-1922), and thence by descent. Burroughs Wellcome supplied a variety of 'tabloid' preparations for Shackleton's expeditions. The present tin appears to have had some salvage use, being cannibalised as a striker for vestas. This, along with its retention by Shackleton, suggests it may be a relic of the Endurance expedition of 1914-1917.
