Lot Essay

The Bear and North Star took the United States government funded and organised Antarctic expedition, which Byrd joined as commander, to Little America in 1939. The expedition was to examine more closely areas in the Pacific sector of Antarctica and the establishment of permanent year round bases on the continent. The expedition returned home in 1941.
