Lot Essay

Sir Charles Hastings Doyle (1805-1883) was the eldest son of Lieutenant-General Sir Charles William Doyle and Sophia, daughter of Sir John Coghill. Educated at Sandhurst, he entered the army as an Ensign in December 1819, was promoted to Lieutenant in 1822, Captain in 1825, Major in 1838, and Lieutenant Colonel in April 1846. He was later to command the troops in Nova Scotia and in 1867 he became Lieutenant Governor of the province, returning to England in 1873. He was promoted to General in 1877 and died suddenly on March 19, 1883.
