Helen G. Kyes was devoted to education and music. Born in 1905 in Marion, Ohio, Helen met and married Roger Kyes, who later became an executive vice president at General Motors and a Deputy Secretary of Defense under President Eisenhower. In 1957, Mrs. Kyes helped establish Oakland University in Rochester, Michigan; later, she funded and had installed a large pipe organ in Varner Recital Hall on campus. The University awarded her an honorary Doctor of Humanities degree in 1980. Mrs. Kyes passed away at the age of 98, leaving two daughters and five grandchildren.
