Trained as a painter and designer, Gidding spent periods studying in both Paris and Munich, experiences which helped shape his expressionistic approach to design. The carpets designed in the late teens and early '20s pronounced bold assertions of pattern and colour, and of particular note was his dazzling overall concept for wall and floor treatments at the Tuschinski Cinema, Amsterdam, 1918-21. Appointed chairman of the avant-garde architectural association 'Opbouw' in 1923, Gidding's subsequent carpets tended increasingly towards the prevailing Modernist aesthetic.

A similar example, loaned from the collection of the Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam, was exhibited Art Deco 1910-1939, Victoria & Albert Museum, London, 27 March - 20 July 2003
