Lot Essay

Devoid of all ornament, Jacobsen's stainless steel utensils were originally designed for use in Copenhagen's flagship SAS Royal Hotel, opened in 1961. The flatware achieved critical success, and the dramatic futuristic styling ensured that the design was selected for use by director Stanley Kubrick in the 1968 science-fiction film 2001: A Space Odyssey
