Charles Umlauf was a prolific sculptor whose works embody both realist and abstract styles. The present sculptures, Seated Figure and Nude Torso, are elegant and sensual examples of the artist's mature work. Umlauf was born in South Haven, Michigan in 1911 and studied at the Chicago School of Sculpture and at the Art Institute of Chicago. After his studies he worked for the Federal Art Project on public commissions in Chicago before moving to Austin in 1941. In Texas he taught sculpture for 40 years at the Art Department of the University of Texas at Austin and was a productive artist who worked in a variety of mediums including wood, terra cotta, bronze and marble. Umlauf and his wife donated their home and studio to the Umlauf Sculpture Garden and Museum in Austin in 1985.
