Lot Essay

During the 17th century the Dutch genre painters were interested in the depiction of basket and parrot cages, but the 18th century laid more emphasis on songbirds, from the 1770's onwards the foreign canary became very popular in the Netherlands. See J. Pluis, Kanariekooitableaus, in Tegel 11, 1983, p. 23, ill. 13 for a similar example in the Miséricorde hospice in Maastricht.
