A Dutch burr-walnut and marquetry musical longcase clock
Otto van Meurs, Amsterdam, third quarter 18th Century
Inlaid overall with fruitwood lines and floral vases, the arched hood surmounted by a concave caddy-top with pierced sound frets to the frieze and sides, with later brass figural finials, the hood with pilasters headed by Corinthian capitals above an arched trunkdoor and glazed lenticle with giltwood rockwork mount, the case with canted angles, bombé plinth and on claw-and-ball feet, the painted dial depicting four elegant ladies allegorical of the four seasons, with silvered chapter ring with Roman and Arabic numerals and seconds ring, the matted and engraved centre with day, month and date aperture and with a silvered plaque inscribed Otto Van Meurs Amsteldam above a rolling moonphase, black-painted pierced hands flanked to the right by melody-register, the five pillar movement with anchor escapement two strikes on bell, the musical train with twenty-nine hammers on fifteen bells and pull repeat, later musical train
