South West Anatolia, late 18th century
The rust-red field with scattered geometric flowerhead and jewellery motifs around a lemon-yellow pendant medallion containing stylised palmettes, the hooked pistachio-green spandrels with angular motifs, in a chocolate-brown polychrome flowerhead border between an ivory geometric cross-motif inner stripe and a lemon-yellow stellar flowerhead outer stripe, long original kilim strips at both ends, original selvages, good pile with one or two localised areas of wear

Lot Essay

In his article noted above, Brian Morehouse puts together a group of rugs of similar design and construction and prefers to attribute them to the Menderes valley area rather than specifically to Dazkiri, a town at the Eastern end of the valley. In his caption to the photograph of the present rug the author attributes it, without apparent explanation, to al, another village in the same Menderes valley as Dazkiri.
