A FINE VICTORIAN SILVER-GILT JOLLY WAGON

Shaped oblong on four spoked wheels, with scroll handle, the fluted wagon with stylized shells and acanthus leaf border, each side with a cartouche engraved with a coat-of-arms and two crests, the wagon with three circular wells supporting detachable wine coasters, each coaster with openwork grapevines and flowers and vacant cartouches, each field engraved with flowering scrolls and coat-of-arms and crests, with wood and leather backed bases, marked on body, scroll handle, each wheel and hub, the base and field of each coaster
The wagon 26in. (66cm.) long, the coasters 6in. (15.3cm.) diameter; the wagon 135oz. (4202gr.)

Lot Essay

The arms are those of Rolt quartering Pett and possibly Price. This jolly wagon likely was made for Peter Pett Rolt (b.1822) to mark his 21st birthday. Peter Pett Rolt was the son of Peter Rolt (1798-1882), Member of Parliament for Greenwich 1852-57. He was admitted to Trinity College, Cambridge in 1842.
