A Gustave Vichy automaton bust of a black banjo player,
the papier-mâché head with open mouth, inset teeth, black hair wig, brown glass eyes and articulated lids, the going-barrel movement in the body playing two airs and causing him to turn and nod his head, strumming the banjo and occasionally lifting his hand in the air while sticking out his tongue and winking each eye alternately, in the original purple ribbed-satin coat edged in geometric-weave braid and tassles, matching conical hat and padded cream silk waistcoat, on ebonised plinth -- 21in. (54cm.) high, with Vichy key, (surface of face and hands cracked, good movement and tone)
