Demy 2o (418 x 261 mm). 10pp. subscribers' list, remnants of slip with additional errata and subscribers pasted onto verso of final preface leaf. Folding engraved map of the island by Thomas Jefferys, 30 engraved plates by and after G.D. Ehret and others, all but the first colored by hand. (Some browning, spotting and offsetting.) Modern red morocco gilt, preserving original red morocco gilt covers, edges gilt. Provenance: Lord Colchester (bookplate); Constitutional Club Library (presentation bookplate from Lord Colchester dated 1887).
FIRST EDITION, LARGE-PAPER ISSUE, WITH CONTEMPORARY HAND-COLORING. "THIS BOOK IS ONE TO PLACE BESIDE CATESBY'S NATURAL HISTORY" (Hunt). The work is often considered a companion to Sloane's Jamaica (see lot 94). Among other contributions, the book is credited as the first to describe grapefruit, calling it the "forbidden fruit" of Barbados.
