Lot Essay

This is the only surviving oil portrait of Stanley Spencer by Hilda. Stanley Spencer regularly painted his own self-portrait:powerful, full-face poses. Hilda's portrait of her future husband seems to have stimulated Stanley to look anew at himself when he came to paint his 1923 self-portrait (private collection). In an atypical pose he leans his half-turned head against a wall and quizzically studies himself.
