A CENTRAL EUROPEAN COPPER AXE-ADZE
CIRCA 2ND MILLENNIUM B.C.
Of massive size, with blades set at right angles, circular shaft hole, 9¼ in. (23.4 cm.) long; a European bronze sword with leaf-shaped blade, the flanged handleplate with flared terminal, slotted tang and four rivet holes on the butt for grip attachment, the hilt with later repair, circa 1000-600 B.C., 22½ in. (57.1 cm.) long; a Central European bronze spiral armlet, flaring towards one end, with incised notched decoration, Bronze Age, circa 1400-800 B.C., 5 1/8 in. (13 cm.) long; a large copper alloy flat axe-head, the long body with curved cutting edge and square butt, probably East Mediterranean, late 2nd millennium B.C., 11¼ in. (28.5 cm.) long; five bronze socketed axe-heads, two with 'Telleheil' chevron decoration, one with flaring crescentic cutting edge, and another with ribs on each face, 5¼ in. (13.3 cm.) long max.; two bronze palstaves, 5 7/8 in. (15 cm.) long max., all Bronze Age, 2nd/early 1st millennium B.C.; and an iron pike-head with prominent angular mid-rib, the tapered octagonal socket with bulbous base, pierced for handle attachment, with remains of two decorative bronze collars and a hatched rim, circa 15th Century A.D., 13 1/8 in. From the collection of the late Gavin Todhunter, acquired mainly during the late 1940s-1970s.
