Lot Essay

John Southern says of this picture (loc.cit.) that 'The technique is typical of Thorburn's illlustrative work: the birds freely finished and not overlaboured... the quick generalisation of the background, whilst accurately indicating the habitat of the species, forms a subdued backcloth to the birds themselves.'
