Lot Essay

William Murray MacKenzie exhibited at the Royal Scottish Academy from 1873 to 1908. He painted rural subjects, and occasionally historical or literary genre. Ana Capri is on the Amalfi Coast in Italy. There is little literature on the artist but it appears that MacKenzie may have travelled to the continent during the early 1880s; those pictures exhibited in 1882 have French titles and in 1883 they are predominantly Italian in subject or theme.
