An early 18th-Century brass Butterfield-type compass sundial,

Details
An early 18th-Century brass Butterfield-type compass sundial,
signed Butterfield AParis, in an octagonal case -- 8.6cm. (3 3/8in.) wide; and a brass-cased compass taken from a mining dial or similar -- 12.4cm. (4 7/8in.) diameter

See Colour Illustration

The Butterfield compass has a bird-shaped pointer for the folding gnomon to read off the latitude scale 40°-60°. The upper surface of the dial bears hour graduations for four latitudes 43°, 46°, 49° and 52°. The glazed compass has a blued-iron needle and is engraved with sixteen compass points. The underside of the dial lists the latitudes of thirty-one Continental cities and towns. The octagonal wooden case is lined in green plush and covered in fishskin, with a sprung catch and one (of two) silver hook and two eyes.
The brass-cased compass has a glazed cover (cracked) and blued-iron needle. It is engraved with an eight-point wind rose and has two degree scales around the circumference. There is a brass cover and slight irregularities to two places on the base suggest it was removed from a mining dial or similar instrument. (2)
