Lot Essay

An example of this figure of Washington signed Devaulx, formerly in the collection of William Lanier Washington, was sold American Art Galleries, New York, 4 February 1920, lot 274. Another signed cast was sold Christie's London, 17 July 1984, lot 180. The Devaulx in question is almost certainly Théodore-François (d. 1870), a Parisian sculptor who made his debut at the Salon in 1845 and specialised in portraits.
