Lot Essay

Modelled in 1837, Lion dévorant une biche was conceived as the pendant to Tigre dévorant une gazelle (see lot 197; Poletti & Richarme, 2000, no. A75[1], p. 207). The bronze modèle was acquired by Goupil at the 1876 Barye atelier sale (lot 625) and edited soon after by Barbedienne. It was subsequently acquired by Jacques Zoubaloff, purchased from the latter's 1927 sale (lot 177, 28,500 francs) by Eduardo Guinle, and finally sold in these rooms, 25 May 1995, lot 144 ($25,300).

An épreuve ancienne of this model was sold Christie's Paris, Collection Charles-Otto Zieseniss, 5-6 December 2001, lot 51 (13,434 Euros).
