Lot Essay

These plates were most likely decorated by one of two celebrated Copeland artists Charles Brayford known for his talent with gilding and birds (active 1878 - 1887) or Charles Brough (active 1880 - 1903) who was cited as painting in gold in Brayford's style. See Anon sale, Christie's New York, 24 April 2002, lot 200 for a set of twelve plates in the identical pattern, most signed by C.B. Brough.
