Marie-Pauline Laurent (née Jullien) working period 1838-1860
This plaque is based on the portrait of a lady, thought to be Titian's mistress, now in the Louvre, which originally belonged to the Gonzagas of Mantua and later passing into the collections of Charles I and Louis XIV (see L'opera completa di Tiziano, Milano, 1969, fig. 52, Tav. XI).
There is a similar, larger plaque (92 x 84cm.) in the Sèvres Museum, painted by Beranger in 1834.
For a discussion of the painted plaques of this period, including mention of some painted by Marie-Pauline Laurent, see The Sèvres Porcelain Manufactory, 1800-1847, Exhibition Catalogue (New York, 1997), p. 89.
