A LATE MING BLUE AND WHITE DOUBLE-GOURD VASE
JIAJING SIX-CHARACTER MARK AND OF THE PERIOD (1522-1566)

Well painted in rich purplish-blue tones on both globular sections with storks flying above waves breaking on rocky cliffs and lingzhi amidst cloud scrolls, all below characters within roundels alternated with peaches, the upper and lower lobes divided by a continuous band of scrolling foliage bearing lingzhi and peach, repeated around the foot, the cylindrical neck with overlapping upright leaves (neck restored, hairlines to foot overpainted foot)

The characters on the upper bulb read feng tiao yu shun, 'soft wind and gentle rain', and on the lower bulb, guo tai min an, 'may the country prosper and the people enjoy peace'.
