Circa 1773
Gilt and painted in colours, depicting Christ standing in a basilica between a pope, three cardinals and three Jesuits, with Christ conversating towards the Jesuits: Ich habe euch noch nie erkant weichet (I did not recognize you recede), and the pope answering: Welches Wunder vor unsern Augen (what a wonder in front of our eyes), the gilt elaborate rocaille frame inscribed La Cassation de l'ordre J.C. and Sous le regne Clemence XIV (the suppression of the Jesuit order under the reign of Clement XIV)

Lot Essay

Pope Clement XIV issued the bull Dominus ac Redemptor noster on the 21th of July 1773 which suppressed the Jesuit order. A long and formidable list of charges had been concocted against the 22.000 members of the order. Pope Pius VII restored the order of Jesus Christ on the 7th of august 1814.
