TWO UNUSUAL ZUSHI [TRAVELLING SHRINE]
Edo Period (19th Century)
A circular box and cover, the exterior red lacquer ground decorated in gold and silver hiramaki-e with falling lotus petals, the interior revealing Amida Buddha seated on a lotus pedestal carved in high relief, details in gold, blue and red, the interior of the cover painted in gold, blue, green and red with lotus flowers and leaves and a water stream; another modelled as a lotus bud, the exterior in plain carved wood, the interior carved in high relief with a standing Buddha on a flaming lotus throne against a double-mandala, the interior of the cover carved with a bonji character and three falling lotus petals, details in gilt, red, green and black
