A SOMEN [FULL FACE MASK]
Muromachi Period (Late 15th Century)
The fine mask forged from one piece of iron with the exception of the nose originally made detachable with hinges, the chin pinched in below a small mouth with yadome [standing flanges] on the cheeks, large eye holes with large rounded eyebrows above, lacquered black inside and out making the nose a fixture, a black lacquer yodarekake [throat defence] of iron hon kozane [true lamellae] in three sections, the centre one divided into three, laced with kon ito kebiki odoshi [dark blue close lacing], wood box
