Lot Essay

The composition follows that of the left wing of the triptych by Cranach of 1535 depicting the Saxon Electors Frederick the Wise, John the Steadfast and John Frederick the Magnanimous (Hamburg, Kunsthalle); besides the number of studio and contemporary replicas of all three portraits, the present composition was also engraved by Dürer.
