Lot Essay

We are very grateful to Professor Wernher Sumowski for dating the picture to the 1660s. As Professor Sumowski notes, the painting displays the continuing debt to Jan Miense Molenaer evident throughout Victors' genre pictures. It is comparable with the signed and dated picture of 1660 (oil on canvas, 100 x 155 cm.), offered at Frederik Muller, Amsterdam, 18-21 June 1957, lot 102. The motif of the male figure by the trough holding the horse's reins recurs in the picture, signed and dated 1654 (oil on canvas, 70 x 90 cm.), in the collection of the Duke of Wellington, Apsley House, London, inv. no. 69.
