Rolex Sport Watches from the Collection of a European Gentleman In 1953, Rolex set the base of an unequaled success story with the launch of the first Submariner model. Originally promoted as "the diver's friend", the Submariner became soon the world's most legendary tool watch and, generations later, is still enjoying wide popularity in its actual version. Based on the Submariners immediate success, Rolex launched sister models such as the GMT Master, the Sea-Dweller, the Explorer and the Milgauss, all classics today which wrote history in the second half of the 20th century. The following six lots represent an attractive coverage of nearly 30 years of development of Rolex sport watches. This small collection stands out in terms of quality and varity; it includes a charismatic so-called "James Bond" Submariner ref. 5508 from 1961 (lot 14), both "red" Sea-Dweller and Submariner models (lots 15 and 16), the notoriously beloved "orange hand" Explorer II (lot 17) with its outstanding 1970s design and the "once ugly duckling" Milgauss with black dial (lot 18), commercially unsuccessful in the 1970s and 1980s and "now white swan" and very thought after collectors watch.
