The Submariner model was introduced to the market at the Basel Fair in 1954 after having been tested during Professor August Piccard and his son Jacques' world depth record of 10,335 feet or 3,150 meters below the ocean's surface. The watch bearing the reference number 6204 had been fixed to the outside of their bathyscaphe and survived the pressure of over 600 atmospheres or two tons per square inch.
The present watch is from the reference 5512 series launched in 1958 and featuring, amongst other modifications, shoulders to protect the winding crown. The reference 5512 has the same look as the reference 5513 but is fitted with a chronometer movement which is also mentioned on the dial.
It is accompanied not only by the complete paperwork and accessories but also the Skin Diver handbook. The intention of this booklet was to show the company's serious involvement with diving and indicates the full decompression table, courtesy of the US Navy, and a dictionary of diver's hand signals.
