FRANCIS I, King of France (1515-1547). Letter signed to the Duke of Wirtamberg, ('Mon Cousin'), St Germain en Laye, 4 March n.y. [1534], ½ page, folio, countersigned, integral address panel.

[My cousin, I have given orders to the bearer of this to tell and make known something to you on my behalf. I beg you to believe it, and what is more to act as he says, so that I may have complete confidence in you].

The letter probably refers to the secret negotiations which Francis I was conducting with Ulrich I, the deposed Duke of Wirtamberg who, early in 1534, appealed to Francis I for help when, during Charles V's absence in Spain, he renewed his quarrel with Ferdinand, King of Rome, the Regent in Germany. After hesitation, Francis contrived to lend him 100,000 crowns.
