NAPOLEON I, Emperor of the French (1804-1821). Autograph annotation signed with initial ('N') to the final leaf of a memorandum (now detached and not present), the original memorandum dated 7 March 1812 and docketed 'Subscriptions du Canal de St Quentin', 4 lines in Napoleon's autograph written diagonally on one page, folio, a transcription provided at upper left corner.
A brief and biting outburst of astonishment: 'il me paroit fort extraordinaire qu'un secretaire d'une administration imprime. Cela est de la folie. le Ministre ne le devoit pas souffrir' [it seems to me absolutely extraordinary that a secretary of an administration should print. It's madness. The Minister should not have allowed it].
