BOWEN, Emanuel (c.1767) and THOMAS KITCHEN (d.1787). The Large English Atlas. London: Thomas Kitchen and others, printed for and sold by Carington Bowles, 1767.

Letterpress title, including index, printed in red and black, 47 double-page engraved maps by Bowen and Kitchin, the last three plates containing 6 single-page maps, of counties and regions of England and Wales, including three general maps of England, Scotland and Ireland, all hand-coloured in outline, elaborate title cartouches with symbols of industry, some engraved by A.Walker, dedicatory cartouches incorporating coats-of-arms, some maps with inset views or plans of cities, the map of London bordered on two sides with the coats of arms of the Free Companies of London, mounted on guards throughout, plates numbered, titles and numbers repeated in manuscript on versos. (Title and first map detached, title worn with loss to right edge affecting text, 8 maps with short tear to lower margin at fold, lower half of 8 maps torn at fold, some creasing, repaired tear to map of Northamptonshire.) Contemporary half calf (boards detached, worn).
The 1676 edition of 'by far the most important eighteenth-century English atlas to be published before the appearance of John Cary's new English atlas in 1787' (Hodson). The highly-detailed and large scale folio maps, engraved by Emanuel Bowen and Thomas Kitchen at the instigation of John Hinton c.1748, were issued from 1749 onwards, and first collected together and issued by John Tinney, Thomas Bowles and Robert Sayer around 1760. The maps in the present edition bear the imprints of John Bowles, Carington Bowles and Sayer, with the map of Berkshire dated 1756. This 'splendid collection of maps' (Chubb) includes inset views or plans of important cities, amongst which are prospects of Ely, York, Leeds, Cardiff, and Chichester. Not in Chubb (cf. CXCVII); Hodson, II, 225.
