ROWE, Elizabeth Singer (1674-1737). Devout Exercises of the Heart ... reviewed and published ... by I. Watts. Edinburgh: Churnside and Wilson, 1778.
24° (85 x 50mm). (Some marginal dampstains, without final advertisement leaf.) Contemporary calf gilt, covers with central green morocco onlay tooled with Prince of Wales feathers and with red paper onlay forming a surrounding sunburst, perched birds on stems above and below, gilt border with red paper onlay, spine gilt with red morocco lettering-piece (small chips to paper onlays), original slipcase with onlays and tooling in similar style to the binding. Provenance: Isabella Keene (contemporary signature) -- [Maggs Catalogue 966, 1975, no. 159]. First published in 1737, Elizabeth Rowe's work remained a classic throughout the century.
