'Not only an oustanding event in the ecclesiastical history of Scotland, but -- as the first known piece of printing executed in Glasgow -- an important stage in the bibliographical history of the city' (Records of the Glasgow Bibliographical Society I, p. 106). Oppostion to the attempt by Charles I and Archbishop Laud to impose a version of the Anglican prayer-book upon the Scottish people provoked violent opposition among the 'Covenanters.' This important pamphlet, by the elected clerk, protested against the Royal proclomation of 29 November 1638, rapidly dissolving the General Assembly which had met in Glasgow on November 21.
