The semi-eggshell porcelain delicately and finely enamelled on the exterior on each side with a couple seated together in front of a black cloth back-drop, he holding a basket of flowers in front of him, she with her bodice unfastened revealing her breasts and holding the stem of a large gilt peony spray, her blushing face turned away from him, below a gilt Y-pattern band at the rim interrupted by two floral lappets, the interior with a pink cell-pattern band with three gilt floral cartouches at the rim and a single gilt lily spray at the centre

An identical bowl, with saucer, from the Martin-Hurst Collection, is illustrated by G. C. Williamson, The Book of Famille Rose, London, 1927, plate XL. A similar saucer from the Van Messel Collection, Amsterdam is illustrated by Hervouët and Bruneau, La Porcelaine des Compagnies des Indes à Décor Occidental, Paris, 1986, pp.156-157, fig.7.43 (colour plate), together with a similar scene on similar services as figs. 7.42 and 7.44. Another saucer is in the Boymans-van Beuningen Museum, Rotterdam, illustrated by D. F. Lunsingh Scheurleer, Chinese Export Porcelain - Chine de Commande, London, 1974, no.220 and p.222.
