Lot Essay

The present figure of St. Paul relates very closely to a similarly sized figure of St. Agnes in the Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam (loc. cit.), dating to circa 1480 and attributed to Adriaen van Wesel. Various elements such as the stylised curls of the hair and beard, the narrow shoulders and the heavy folds of the drapery are very similar stylistic traits to those evident in the present lot. Furthermore, the form of the drapery, which is broad and angled above and gathering in smaller clusters at the feet, almost certainly connects the present lot to the Rijksmuseum example and van Wesel's workshop.
