Lot Essay

The Chicago born Loie Fuller (1862-1928) was the toast of the Paris stage at the turn of the 20th Century, her flowing silk costumes and interpretative dancing style enabling her to transform herself into flowers, clouds, flames, moths and birds. Her many admirers included Toulouse-Lautrec and Rodin, and Stephane Mallarmé called her 'the physical embodiment of an idea'. Her dances typified the naturalistic inspiration of the Art Nouveau movement
