A SCOTTISH MAHOGANY 'LUM' CHEST
Early 19th century
With a central deep drawer decorated with beading and flanked to the left by two small drawers and to the right with one deep drawer simulated as two small drawers, above three further drawers and bun feet, an inscription written in ink under the top immediately above the central drawer reads 'Thomas Simpson 5 High School Wynd, Edinburgh'

Lot Essay

This maker (fl.1825-1827) is recorded in Francis Bamford, A Dictionary of Edinburgh Wrights and Furniture Makers 1660-1840, Furniture History Society, vol.XIX (1983).

This Scottish chest is a classical form with the deep central upper drawer and was made widely throughout Scotland in the 19th century; however, this example is only one of a handful which can be ascribed to a particular maker.
