Lot Essay

This, almost abstract, pottery model radiates an unusual elegance. The unknown artist was, as it were, able to create a balance between her delicately modelled bust, free arms covered by wide sleeves, her overly narrow waist and voluminous robe ending in a train-gown. Her face demonstrates already the characteristic enigmatic smile so common for the slightly later Wei examples.
A very similar seated court lady with the same dress, smily face and hairdress is in the Guimet Museum and illustrated in J-P. Desroches, Compagnons d'Eternité, Trésors du Musée Guimet, Paris 1996, pp.65-66.

The results of the Oxford thermoluminescence test no. 466d71 are consistent with the dating of this lot.
