Augustus John's house, Alderney, was a home for many people, one of them being Fanny Fletcher. Fanny was a poor art student, later revered for her wallpapers, 'who arrived for a few weeks, knitted herself into the household with her cardigans and gained the reputation for being a rather inefficient witch whose salad dressings were said to contain spells' (see M. Holroyd, Augustus John, London, 1996, p. 381).
