A GEORGE III SOLID MAHOGANY BERGERE
Circa 1770
The arched upholstered back and downswept part-upholstered arms covered with a continuous stiff-leaf and berry design, with rosette-headed fluted arm terminals on detached baluster supports, with squab cushion to the seat, upholstered throughout in a garland-patterned silk, raised on paterae capped, leaf and pearl-collared turned and reeded tapering legs

Lot Essay

A side chair form this suite is illustrated in R.W. Symonds, Masterpieces of English Furniture and Clocks, 1940, p. 20, fig. 12. A set of twelve chairs from the collection of Francis P. Garvan (purchased from Arthur S. Vernay in 1929) was sold from the collection of Vernay and Jussel, New York, Sotheby's New York, 25 April 1992, lot 471. Another pair was sold by Sotheby's New York, 21 January 1995, lot 352 and single chair was sold anonymously, Christie's New York, 18 October 2001, lot 339.
